We learned the average recession lasts 11 months. Successful companies take the opportunity to evaluate, assess, innovate and improve their businesses when times are difficult.

While a small percentage of companies may not survive a recession, companies that sustain or even improve their long-term success during and post-recession have similar qualities: they focus on driving value and reducing risk.

Thank you for attending the recession session with Zack Gibson from Class VI Partners!

There are 10 questions companies should be asking themselves right now to mitigate risk and drive value:

  1. How can we expand our market?
  2. Is there an untapped niche we can fill?
  3. Are we vulnerable by having any single key employee dependency (in some cases, it may be the business owner)?
  4. How can we develop a deeper and more experienced team?
  5. Do we have any concentrations to address that are adding risk to the business (product concentrations, vendor concentrations, customer concentrations)?
  6. Are there areas we are investing and not generating the return we expect? Do we have legacy costs we can shed?
  7. Can we provide a higher margin product or increase price?
  8. Can we diversify vendors or suppliers?
  9. Do we have long-term contracts in place with vendors or client accounts?
  10. Do we have organizational systems in place to facilitate growth and improve our business (technology, staffing, etc)?

What If? Exercise

Zack also suggested doing a “What If? exercise.” Have your employees create a list of “What If” questions, including good and bad scenarios. Then take those scenarios and brainstorm solutions and put systems in place to address or mitigate the repercussions.

Scenario examples:
